Scaffolding safety tips: Follow these to avoid trouble

As a construction worker, you may find yourself working on scaffolding throughout the day. Even if you're not actually using this equipment, there's a good chance you're in close proximity to it every now and again.

There's no denying the fact that the use of scaffolding can make your job easier, such as if you're laying bricks or painting a building.

However, if you're going to use scaffolding, you need to follow these safety tips at all times. Doing so will lessen the likelihood of an accident that causes injury or death:

  • Always follow the instructions when erecting scaffolding
  • Never use damaged or defective scaffolding such as pieces that are set aside
  • Scaffolding should always rest on firm and level ground
  • Don't attempt to use scaffolding in inclement weather such as heavy rain or strong wind
  • Don't place too much weight on the scaffolding at one time
  • Never attempt to move scaffolding when someone is standing on it
  • Be sure to level the scaffolding each time it is moved
  • Use safety belts at all times, especially when working on scaffolding at a height of 10 feet or more
  • Never drop items from scaffolding to the ground below, as it could strike someone
  • Don't walk underneath scaffolding, as you never know if it could fall or something could hit you from above
  • Never lean out of the scaffolding
  • Keep the ground clear of any debris and tools, as these can cause a trip-and-fall accident
  • Lock the wheels on rolling scaffolding before using it

It's not always easy to follow these safety tips, especially if you are in a hurry. Unfortunately, it only takes a simple mistake to cause an accident that results in a serious injury.

If you are part of a scaffolding accident on a construction site, you'll want to receive immediate medical treatment. You should also report the incident to your supervisor, as you want your company to know that you were hurt on the job.

Once you receive treatment, you can learn more about the cause of the accident and the steps you can take to protect your legal rights.
